Dumating mula sa Europa si Crisostomo Ibarra, anak ng namatay na si Don Rafael. Hinangaan siya at binati ng maraming panauhin sa bahay ni Kapitan Tiyago. Nagulat si Crisostomo Ibarra sa pagtatakwil ni Padre Damaso sa kanyang pag-aalaala nang lapitan siya ni Tenyente Guevarra at purihin niyon ang kanyang ama.
